Passing of a downtown friend, Lee Doyle
On Mother's day, Petaluma lost a wonderful resident and downtown fixture, Lee Doyle. Lee stopped by most days on his rounds of the downtown businesses. His 30 years of being a cable car gripman in San Francisco ensured great stories that were always fun & interesting. He loved to tell the stories of his Army days in Germany. He appreciated art, especially of women. He had an endearing way about him that we loved at Pelican Art Gallery.

I could always count on welcoming him to the gallery with "Hey Lee, how's it going?" & getting his most common response of "Okay, so far" with a grin.

Lee was always willing to help & donate to a good cause as long as he could do it anonymously. His truck was at our disposal. We were sure to get his opinion on projects around the gallery & eventually at the house. We'll miss you Lee Doyle!

Comment: I was sorry to hear of Le's passing. Sorry to say I was not close enough to him to even know he had taken ill.Le was one nice person and a good grip.I always admired his neatness and skill while at work. Le was kind to me when I first started gripping and I am forever greatful for that. Rest in peace brother. Bruce C.

Comment: Yes, Le was a character, and a good one. I too always enjoyed having him visit at Pelican Art and to chat. His love of cats was a tip off about his soft interior. "See you in the Spring!" was usually his statement in parting -- and I'll look forward to Spring with Le.

Comment: Thank you so much for that post about my Uncle Le. I too had the opportunity to see him often downtown as our office is right next door to the Surf Shop, in which he was a regular visitor. The last several years my mom (his sister) and I used to spend time together at the Butter and Eggs Day parade. We would also catch up the following day at the Antique Faire, spend the day walking around and getting a bite to eat. My Uncle was a pretty regular fixture in our lives growing up and his passing has left a big hole in our hearts. We love and miss you Uncle Le!

Comment: What a lovely post! Thank you for being such good friends with Le. Le was my uncle and my mothers only sibling. It was gut wrenching to lose him so suddenly. So many people came to see him in his last days. So many friends called my cousin to extend their condolences and tell stories of their connection with Le. We were stunned to find out how many people he helped. His cable car cronies came out of the woodwork! One young man hadn't seen him in 20 years but came to lend his emotional support when he was told Le was hospitalized. He told us stories of taking the cable car to school and his fascination in the strength of a man smaller than any other grip-man in S.F. cable car history. My uncle had a special place in his heart for feral cats. I remember a phone call to me about his concern for the 'strays' and his desire to help. He took them in without a second thought and showered them with love and affection. He was a softy through and through. There is a part of Uncle Le in all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
